POSITION Editor, ESL/ELL
REPORTS TO Editorial Director
SALARY Competitive Salary and Benefits Package

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position is responsible for ensuring that the instructional materials developed by the Company meet PreK-12 ELL market needs, are pedagogically sound, and are of a high level of editorial quality.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Editor, ESL/ELL has responsibility for the following:

  • Monitoring and assessing the quality of work from various out-of-house development houses, writers, and editors;
  • Editing manuscript and page proofs, based on guidelines and checklists;
  • Editing, re-writing, and writing, as assigned, prototypes and products under development;
  • Developing writers guidelines and checklists to ensure the highest quality of manuscript;
  • Establishing a grade-, subject-, and region-specific database of reviewers (teachers and administrators) to offer specific feedback on various instructional materials in development;
  • Performing competitive analyses to determine product features and components of new products;
  • Reviewing the comments of reviewers and the results of pilots to help determine the scope and extent of changes required to products in development or published;
  • Researching and monitoring national and state standards (ESL/ELD and content-area) and correlating materials in development to these standards, during and after publication;
  • Keeping up with instructional, demographic and other market trends to ensure product responsiveness to target markets;
  • Brainstorming and developing ideas for new products; § Writing and editing articles for The ELL Outlook, an e-newsletter published by Course Crafters on a bi-monthly basis;
  • Identifying products in the international EFL, ELT, ESL, and domestic mainstream markets for potential acquisition and adaptation;
  • Adapting, editing, and enhancing licensed materials to meet U.S. ELL market needs;
  • Reading, analyzing, and implementing the findings of various research studies, as required.
Other tasks and responsibilities, as assigned.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

This individual has a number of key relationships, including but not limited to:

  • A partner with state-, district-, and school-level decision makers and instructional leaders in target markets, providing support and actively soliciting feedback on an ongoing basis
  • Collaborates closely with the Editorial Director and the Marketing Director to ensure the development and publication of instructionally sound, market responsive products
  • Supports the Sales Manager and sales reps to plan and secure sales and support sales efforts, by providing workshops and other professional development support, both before and after the sale
  • Cooperates with consultants, authors, reviewers, and editorial, marketing, and sales management to develop presentations and workshops that will achieve company goals

SUCCESS FACTORS:

In order for this individual to be successful, he/she must:

  • Dedication and commitment to producing state-of-the-art, pedagogically sound instructional materials that will raise the academic achievement of ELLs
  • 2-5 years experience as a developmental editor of educational materials for ELLs, K-8, in an educational publishing company or development house
  • Demonstrated ability to translate ELL instructional theory/research into practical, teacher- and student-centered instructional materials, as an editor and/or writer of ESL materials
  • Advanced degree (Masters or better) in education, TESOL, language and literacy, bilingual education, or another ELL-related field
  • K-5 ESL/bilingual teaching experience
  • Knowledge of the challenges U.S. ELLs and their teachers face, preK-12
  • Strong self-motivated work ethic and follow-through
  • Excellent communication skills, orally and in writing
  • Eye for detail; excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in various Microsoft products: Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Copyediting and proofreading skills a plus.
